Job Description

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides continuous and comprehensive services necessary for the promotion of optimal mental health, prevention and treatment of psychiatric disorders and health maintenance.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with physicians and/or mental health providers in the treatment of clients.
  • Communicates quickly and effectively with patients, family members and other providers.
  • Participates as a member of an interprofessional team of behavioral health and primary care providers, patients and family members.
  • Conducts brief, evidence based and developmentally appropriate screening
  • Provides more detailed assessments when indicated.
  • Provides a range of prevention, treatment and recovery services for patients with persistent illnesses.
  • Determines a differential diagnosis and plan for intervention through patient evaluation.
  • Maintains a customer-oriented approach to meeting patient needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality and patient privacy.
  • Documents care provided.
  • Seeks consultations as appropriate, and acts as a consultant as requested.
  • Facilitates the process of ethical decision making as appropriate.
  • Performs comprehensive assessments.
  • Refers patients for further care and services within the clinic.
  • Adapts health interventions to the workflow and pace that is needed.
  • Utilizes teaching learning theory with patients and their families to influence patient outcomes.
  • Identifies learning needs of various populations.
  • Contributes to the development of educational programs to meet learning needs.
  • Identifies system specific problems and resolve them performance improvement processes.
  • Takes an active role to contribute to the improvement of office functioning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

  • Knowledge of the principles and skill in the practice of psychiatry.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and verbally with all constituents.
  • Ability to function independently with regards to most clinical decision making.
  • Ability to meet client documentation requirements in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills.
  • Ability to be practical, flexible and adaptable in the process of working with others.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Education or Formal Training:

  • Masters prepared Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry.

Experience:

  • 2 or more years of experience working with all ages - adolescents to adults in a community health or primary care setting.

Working Conditions and Other Conditions of Employment

Working Environment:

This job operates in a fast-paced, professional office environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers. The position may require travel to conferences, meetings and branch locations on a regular or intermittent basis. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. In the health center environment, there is potential for contact with blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases, as well as potential for contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals. There could be interaction with persons who are mentally ill, disabled, elderly and emotionally upset.

Physical Activities:

These are representative of those which must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This is a largely sedentary role but can involve standing or sitting for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, and using hands and fingers to handle and file papers or operate assigned equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Employee may also have to lift 10 to 25 lbs. unassisted.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Annual TB, federally required drug screening, and Influenza vaccination or compliance with policy and procedure.
  • Required possession of a valid state driver's license.
  • Successful candidate must submit to and pass, post-offer drug screen.

Shifts will typically be 24 hours at a time
